Autism: Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Immune Abnormalities

In 2007, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an autism alarm, estimating that one in 150 children may be affected by autism spectrum disorder. Autism has been treated mainly with technical approaches: principally applied behavior analysis and psychopharmacology. The findings in this book implicate oxidative stress as a common feature in autism, and support the claim that oxidative stress and intracellular redox imbalance can be induced or triggered in autism by exposure to certain environmental agents. Such findings could point the way to new treatment approaches in autism. Autism: Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Immune Abnormalities brings together a wealth of cutting-edge evidence that is already influencing how we treat this serious condition. It looks at the role of neuropathological abnormalities, genetics, and those factors common to oxidative stress such as inflammation, immune dysfunction, aberrant cellular signaling, and gene-environment interactions. Among dozens of research topics, this volume — Looks at interactions between genetic and environmental factors such as the maternal immune environment and prenatal/postnatal environmental stressors Summarizes evidence for oxidative damage and inflammation in autism Introduces a PDD behavior inventory as a tool for assessing autism Considers autism as an aberrant adaptive response to neuroinflammation and oxidative stress Examines the role of abnormal calcium signaling and the hypothesis that it may represent a target for novel therapeutics Presents a hypothesis that autism arises from the dysregulation of a unified gut/brain system rather than originating in the brain alone Proposes the utility of using a biopsychosocial method to treat autism This book shows us that autism is not only developmental but also a chronic condition based on active pathophysiology, and that it is not only behavioral but also presents somatic and systemic features. The findings in these chapters support the theory that oxidative stress plays an important role in autism. They also point to the value of conducting in-depth mechanistic studies as a way to uncover new targets for therapeutic intervention in autism.

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, Human Immunology: Patient-Ba

Biomedical research on human subjects is notoriously difficult because of the difficulties in controlling the variables, locating a large enough sample size, and managing the ethical issues that have to be considered for every experiment. This volume contains contributions from scientists who have received grants from the Dana Foundation, and their work in the complex and diverse field of human immunology is notable for both its breadth and its depth. Patient-based research in the areas of cancer, infectious disease, allergy, inflammation, and autoimmunity are summarized. It is through clinical studies that findings in animal models make their way into the arsenal of treatments available for human patients, and this volume demonstrates the progress of translational research in human immunology.NOTE: Annals volumes are available for sale as individual books or as a journal. Practical Review of Neuropathology

This introductory text reflects a modern approach to neuropathology. Coverage includes molecular and cellular aspects of neuropathology as well as clinical material. Each section begins with a pathobiological overview, followed by specific details of the problems discussed. This approach permits a deeper understanding of neuropathology since it demonstrates the convergence of numerous diseases on a common set of pathophysiological mechanisms. Residents, fellows, and clinicians in pathology, neurology, and neurosurgery will find this book and its numerous algorithms helpful for general review and exam preparation.

Biomechanics and Motor Control of Human Movement

Looks at human body movement as a mechanical system and examines techniques used to measure and analyze all body movements. Each limb of the body is treated as a separate segment connected at hinge joints. Muscles are replaced by actuators and the net effect of all muscles is replaced by torque motors. The characteristics of those actuators are documented, along with their neural control as represented in the readily available electromyographic signal. The book's organization is such that description of the movement is covered first, followed by chapters that examine the cause of the movement at kinetic and electromyographic levels. Will appeal to all those involved in the study of a wide variety of human movement problems--from pathological gait to chronic running injuries. Material on biomechanical techniques contributes to the understanding of such everyday movements as walking and lifting. Information is integrated with a common set of data and analyses. In addition, basic physics principles are presented in capsule form for ease of use. This text is a substantial revision of the widely used Biomechanics of Human Movement, updated and retitled to reflect progress in the field.

Neurobiology of Alzheimer's Disease (Molecular and Cellular Neurobi

This new edition of a book first published in 1995, presents an accessible and up-to-date overview of Alzheimer's disease, with an emphasis on research into the molecular mechanisms of neuronal degeneration. Leading international experts have provided in-depth reviews of their areas of expertise, including coverage of the key molecules known to be involved, such as Ab, tau, apolipoprotein E, and the presenilins. Other areas covered include neuropathology, genetics, neurochemical pathology, inflammation, diagnosis, models of the disease, and opportunities for treatment, employing both current and emerging drug therapies. The book will provide a readable introduction for those new to the subject, as well as covering a wide range of specialist topics for the more experienced researcher and those interested in the overlap with other related specialist areas. Also included are appendices detailing gene and protein information on APP, tau, the presenilins, apolipoprotein E, and the newly cloned therapeutic target, BACE.
