A concise review of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and management of common respiratory conditions seen in a primary care setting. Using an illuminating case-based approach, Dr. Mintz assesses the key clinical questions that a primary care physician would ask and applies the most up-to-date research and guidelines to offer the practitioner evidence-based solutions. The author covers the range of knowledge needed to provide excellent care for patients with respiratory disease, from the basics of pulmonary function testing to understanding and caring for common respiratory illnesses, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, allergic rhinitis, and pneumonia. For each disorder, Dr. Mintz explains the key points regarding the epidemiology of the disease, its pathophysiology, the differential diagnosis and diagnosis, and its recommended treatment. A special PDA version of Disorders of the Respiratory Tract: Common Challenges in Primary Care is also available.

This book, which takes as its focus the biology and pathology of glial cells, pays special attention to the issues concerning the cellular and molecular interactions occurring between glia and neurons. Research over the last 30 years has shown that, contrary to previously held conceptions of the role of glial cells as being of secondary importance to that of neurons, they are major constituents of the nervous system, playing a pivotal role during development and adulthood. Moreover, recent evidence suggests that glial cells are involved in a number of disease states, some of which are still incurable, such as Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis and other central and peripheral neuropathies. It is also well known that Schwann cells, the major glial cells of the peripheral nervous system, are unique in their ability to sustain and promote regeneration not only of peripheral but also of central neurons after traumatic injury. Thus the relatively new idea of repairing CNS damage through the transplantation of glial cells is an approach with great clinical potential. Bringing together contributions from expert researchers in the field, this is an informative and forward thinking approach to a continuously expanding field.

Delineates the fundamentals of functional tooth form through drawings and carvings. Each illustration clearly pinpoints the critical landmarks--particularly those of posterior teeth. Plaster models of the eight typical tooth forms are used to demonstrate the differential anatomy of individual teeth. Detailed instructions are offered on drawing teeth to scale and on carving them in plaster, wax, or ivorine.

Thoroughly updated to reflect the latest refinements in operative technique, this full-color atlas provides a surgeon’s-eye view of the anatomic structures and relationships encountered during all facial surgical procedures. It features more than 100 drawings by Dr. Makielski, a head and neck surgeon, and more than 100 photographs. This Second Edition’s brand-new chapter on embryology emphasizes congenital anomalies such as clefts and dermoid cysts. New illustrations show the surgical anatomy of endoscopic approaches and recently developed procedures, including the SOOF lift. This edition also includes more detail on the osteocutaneous and retaining ligaments and the supporting ligaments and tendons of the orbit.

This superb atlas of the sectional anatomy of the head and neck (exclusive of the CNS) is presented in two complementary planes, coronal and horizontal. Sixty-four exceptional pen-and-ink illustrations accurately capture the fine detail of 3mm thick sections through the region. Every detail was exactly transferred from photographs of the section and its identification was confirmed by microdissection of the exposed surface. These pen-and-ink images have been reproduced at natural size in labeled and unlabeled pairs, an approach that allows the complete identification of structures without masking critical anatomical detail. The captions that accompany each set of illustrations provide brief, authoritative information about the section and how it relates to adjacent tissues. Difficult concepts such as regional compartments and facial spaces are clearly explained, reflecting the broad experience of the senior author in teaching the basic as well as the applied clinical anatomy of the head and neck. Twenty-two sections have been selected for radiographic imaging. These high-resolution radiographs portray planar detail at a level which closely simulates that revealed by high-quality CT images of the region. Introductory chapters review the history of sectional anatomy and provide a unique overview of the fundamental organization of the head and neck. They enhance the value of an atlas that will guide the student and clinician through a sequential study of this anatomically intricate region and will aid radiologists in interpreating bony images and relating them to the soft tissues which surround them.
