Essentials of Interactive Functional Anatomy

Essentials of Interactive Functional Anatomy will help test candidates thoroughly review components of structural anatomy through computer graphic models of the human anatomy. Individuals will be able to view fully interactive 3-D animations that detail muscle and joint function. The DVD features a complete high-resolution 3-D model of the human musculature. The model can be rotated and allows for 11 layers of anatomy to be visually removed (from skin to bone) with a strip-away technique. Specific muscles within the 3-D model can be highlighted for viewing accompanying text about the selected muscle, such as name, agonists, antagonists, proximal and distal attachments, nerve innervation, blood supply, and primary and secondary actions. Text also accompanies specific ligaments within the model, providing information on function, injury mechanism, and pathology of injury. The Essentials of Interactive Functional Anatomy CD also includes the following: 34 animations each of which can be viewed from four different angles show clinical muscle function and providing students with a strong sense of the movement and motions around joints. Four animations of gross human motions demonstrate complete body movements, such as sit-ups and push-ups, coupled with live-action video clips showing the electrical stimuli of active muscles. Views of any specific structure on the screen can be rotated up to 360 degrees and stopped at any point for viewing. Related text on structures further defines the structure being viewed.

Brain, Behavior and Epigenetics (Epigenetics and Human Health)

Biomedical research in the first decade of the 21st century has been marked by a rapidly growing interest in epigenetics. The reasons for this are numerous, but primarily it stems from the mounting realization that research programs focused solely on DNA sequence variation, despite their breadth and depth, are unlikely to address all fundamental aspects of human biology. Some questions are evident even to non-biologists. How does a single zygote develop into a complex multicellular organism composed of dozens of different tissues and hundreds of cell types, all genetically identical but performing very different functions? Why do monozygotic twins, despite their stunning external similarities, often exhibit significant differences in personality and predisposition to disease? If environmental factors are solely the cause of such variation, why are similar differences also observed between genetically identical animals housed in a uniform environment? Over the last couple of decades, epigenetics has undergone a significant metamorphosis from an abstract developmental theory to a very dynamic and rapidly developing branch of molecular biology. This volume represents a compilation of our current understanding about the key aspects of epigenetic processes in the brain and their role in behavior. The chapters in this book bring together some of the leading researchers in the field of behavioral epigenetics. They explore many of the epigenetic processes which operate or may be operating to mediate neurobiological functions in the brain and describe how perturbations to these systems may play a key role in mediating behavior and the origin of brain diseases.

The Atlas of Mouse Development

Not since the early 1970s has there been an attempt to describe and illustrate the anatomy of the developing mouse embryo. More than ever such material is needed by biologists as they begin to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying development and differentiation. After more than ten years of painstaking work, Matt Kaufman has completed The Atlas of Mouse Development--the definitive account of mouse embryology and development. For all those researching or studying mammalian development, The Atlas of Mouse Development will be the standard reference work for many years to come. Key Features* Provides a comprehensive sequential account of the development of the mouse from pre-implantation to term* Contains clear and concise descriptions of the anatomical features relevant to each stage of development* Large format for easy use* Contains explanatory notes and legends, and more than 180 meticulously labeled plates, 1,300 photographs of individual histological sections, and 200 electron micrographs, illustrating:* Intermittent serial histological sections through embryos throughout embryogenesis and organogenesis* Differentiation of specific organs and organ systems, including the spinal cord, eyes, gonads, kidneys, lungs and skeletal system* External appearance of intact embryos throughout development
