The aim of this book is to present statistical problems and methods in a friendly way to radiologists, emphasizing statistical issues and methods most frequently used in radiological studies (e.g., nonparametric tests, analysis of intra- and interobserver reproducibility, comparison of sensitivity and specificity among different imaging modality, difference between clinical and screening application of diagnostic tests, ect.). The tests will be presented starting from a radiological "problem" and all examples of statistical methods applications will be "radiological".

Phosphorylation is the addition of a phosphate (PO4) group to a protein or other organic molecule. Phosphorylation activates or deactivates many protein enzymes, causing or preventing the mechanisms of diseases such as cancer and diabetes. This book shows how to use mass spectrometry to determine whether or not a protein has been correctly modified by the addition of a phosphate group. It also provides a combination of detailed, step-by-step methodology for phosphoproteomic sample preparation, mass spectral instrumental analysis, and data interpretation approaches. Furthermore, it includes the use of bioinformatic Internet tools such as the Blast2GO gene ontology (GO) tool, used to help understand and interpret complex data collected in these studies.

The problem many microbiologists face is simply that of too much information. This book details many published methods for comparison of genomes, and provides examples of how custom comparisons can be made. The choice of methods obviously depends on the questions to be asked, and of course on the quantity of genomes to be compared. Two similar bacterial chromosomes can simply be aligned with each other, and regions of inversions and deletions can be readily visualised. However, this method wonât work to compare hundreds of genomes, where 2-Dimensional clustering heat maps would be useful. This text is built around teaching COMPUTATIONAL / BIOINFORMATIC methods for comparison of microbial genomes, and includes detailed examples of how to compare them at the level of DNA, RNA, and protein, in terms of structural / functional analysis. Aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students in Bioinformatics and Microbiology, this book will prove an invaluable reference to computational and bioinformatics tools.

Designed to be used as a self-paced review, this text outlines the functional groups common to organic chemistry, reviewing the general topics of nomenclature, physical and chemical properties, and metabolism. The text provides background material for the formal pharmacy courses in medicinal chemistry, easing the transition from general organic chemistry courses required of all pre-pharmacy students. The Fourth Edition will include a workbook on CD-ROM as well as an index on general drug metabolism. Students who use this text are able to complete difficult tasks such as: drawing a chemical structure or official chemical name; predicting solubility of chemicals in liquids; predicting and showing, with chemical structures, the metabolism of organic functional groups; predicting and showing instabilities, with chemical structures.

This book reviews the scientific literature on this popular supplement explaining the importance and many benefits of this substance. DHA is short for docosahexaenoic acid, which one of the Omega-3 fatty acids found in cold water marine sources such as algae and fish such as salmon, sardines, haddock and tuna. Omega-3 fatty acids are an essential part of our daily diet, but deficiencies are prevalent as few individuals consume its food sources on a regular basis. This important structural fatty acid forms 25% of the brain. Adequate dietary amounts are needed to support healthy brain and visual formation throughout all stages of life (beginning in the womb via the mother). DHA deficiencies are seen among individuals with memory loss, Alzheimers disease, depression, ADD and ADHD (adults and children), addiction disorders (especially alcoholism), aggression disorders and schizophrenia. DHA is also involved in prostaglandin regulation and production which have hundreds of important functions in the body such as regulation of cholesterol and triglycerides, clotting, inflammation, metabolism, insulin, etc. This is why sufficient levels of DHA are important for individuals with coronary artery disease, inflammatory disorders such as arthritis, allergies, asthma, and psoriasis, diabetes, and also cancer. DHA is even necessary for proper weight regulation. New and exciting research has demonstrated how DHA supplementation can help many individuals with these conditions and many others. The book discusses the benefits of supplementation, reviews food sources of DHA, and even offers a few of the authors favorite salmon recipes.

The bestselling first edition of Textbook of Receptor Pharmacology originated from a renowned course in receptor pharmacology taught at the University College of London for the past three decades. Its innovative format united four major approaches to the study of receptors: molecular biology, quantitative functional studies of agonists and antagonists, ligand binding, and signal transduction systems. The second edition builds on this foundation. This edition streamlines the material and focuses on cell membrane receptors along with their immediate signal transducers. The section on the molecular structure of receptors reflects the advances in this area. This edition also includes two restructured new chapters, one on G-proteins and one on tyrosine kinases, as signal transductors. Several chapters also contain problems for students to solve as well as worked-out solutions. The book contains over one hundred useful diagrams and tables to aid illustration of concepts and a helpful appendix explaining the simple mathematics used in the text. A time-saving resource and comprehensive textbook, Textbook of Receptor Pharmacology, Second Edition provides in-depth, up-to-date coverage of this still rapidly expanding research area that is both fundamental to the science of pharmacology and on the cutting edge of new drug development.
