The Ecology of Mycobacteria

Detailed information dealing with the ecology of mycobacteria is derived from a variety of different scientific fields such as botany, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology and epidemiology. This is the first attempt to evaluate this information from an ecological point of view and to develop a strategy for the prevention of tuberculosis and other mycobacterioses based on the ecological behavior of mycobacteria, especially the potentially pathogenic species capable of either growth in the environment or provoking disease. Regarding the interests of the developing countries, special attention is paid to the ecology of Mycobacterium leprae and to the supporting effect of accompanying mycobacteria in its pathogenicity. On a more positive side, environmental mycobacteria play an important role in the ecology of moorland dragonflies. Such a book is needed for specialists working in the field of mycobacterial research, clinical laboratories, the public health service, food hygiene, the water industry and in general ecology.

Campylobacter: NEW PERSPECTIVES IN MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR BIOLOGY

The publication of the complete sequence of the C. jejuni genome in 2000 provided new insight into this leading gastrointestinal pathogen and presented scientists with an exciting resource to improve our understanding of the biology of this bacterium. In this book internationally recognised Campylobacter experts critically review the most important aspects of Campylobacter research, providing the first coherent picture of the organism’s molecular and cellular biology since the publication of the genome. Most contributions are written from a molecular and genomic perspective and contain speculative models upon which to base future research efforts. Introductory chapters explore the taxonomy, genetic diversity, habitats, and epidemiological analysis of campylobacters. Other chapters review Campylobacter plasmid biology, antimicrobial resistance, stress response, motility, chemotaxis, metabolism and bioenergetics of C. jejuni, and polysaccharide biosynthesis (including lipooligosaccharide, capsule biosynthesis, and protein glycosylation). The final chapters focus more directly on interactions with the host, for example, the mechanisms of host cell invasion, interactions with phagocytes, and the use of microarrays to analyze gene expression in response to infection by C. jejuni. Each chapter is independent and can be read in isolation, but as a whole the book provides an important resource summarising our current knowledge of Campylobacter molecular and cellular biology. Essential reading for all researchers working with Campylobacter and related organisms.

Psychotropic Bacteria in FoodsDisease and Spoilage

Psychrotrophic Bacteria in Foods: Disease and Spoilage presents a comprehensive review of psychrotrophic bacteria and other pathogens and their role in causing food spoilage in refrigerated and frozen foods. The book focuses on the growth, survival, and subsequent activity of these organisms, especially in meat and poultry products. Metabolic products of bacterial growth in foods as indicators of spoilage are described. The book also discusses the potential microbiological hazard posed to "new generation" minimally processed refrigerated foods.Psychrotrophic Bacteria in Foods: Disease and Spoilage is an informative reference for food microbiologists and other food scientists working in industry and academia. It will also be useful to researchers and personnel in regulatory agencies.

Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever: A Global Perspective

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne disease associated with severe hemorrhagic manifestations. CCHF has been referred to as the "Asian Ebola." However, in fact, the disease is one of the most widely distributed tick-borne diseases in the world, occurring in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. This volume covers major aspects of this important disease and the virus which causes it. Chapters are written by leading experts in their fields and detail historical, public health, epidemiological, and clinical aspects of CCHF and the genetics and molecular biology of the virus. Additional chapters focus on disease control, tick vectors and infection among animals, both natural and experimental. This book will be of interest to virologists, microbiologists, medical entomologists, infectious disease physicians, epidemiologists, public health specialists, veterinary scientists, public health policy makers, journalists, and medical educators.

Bacteria and Cancer

Bacterial infections cause substantial morbidity and mortality in cancer patients. These infections always remained enigmatic due to initial reluctance of cancer researchers in understanding their etiologic potential. Etiological association of bacteria with cancer gained credibility after discovery of carcinogenic potential of Helicobacter pylori. Moreover, other suspected associations including Salmonella typhi and gallbladder cancer, Streptococcus bovis and colon cancer, Chlamydia psittaci and ocular adnexal lymphoma and Chlamydia pneumoniae with lung cancer, etc. are looking for a legitimate appraisal to unravel their etiologic potential without prejudice.  In contrary, bacteria also show protective role in certain types of cancer. Certain agents derived from bacteria are successfully in practice for the management of cancer. The integrate association of bacteria and cancer is evident in both positive and negative aspects. The role of bacteria in cancer etiology and treatment is vigorously studied since last few years. Present book tries to provide current status of research undergoing in above direction, with the glimpses of future possibility for using microbiological knowledge in the management of this deadly killer. This book will interest specialists dealing with cancer associated infectious complications, researchers working in the field of cancer biology, teachers and scientists in the field of microbiology, biotechnology, medicine and oncology. The unique coverage of bacteriology and cancer association in both positive and negative way can usher into development of novel thrust area for microbiology students and experts.
